"Look, mama! There's a mermaid somewhere in there!" The pudgy little child was leaving smudge marks all along the glass as she glassed her nose up against it trying to find the mermaid that the sign was boasting about.
The water in the large 10 foot by 10 foot tank was crystal clear, large exotic fish clashed with the blue water. Even the coral was beautiful, bright purple, green and blue wafting in the current as the water was continuously filtered through. The crowd wasn't pushing to see the beautiful sea life in the tank, though. On the contrary, there was something in that tank that defied mortal-human science. There was something in that tank that was currently being hidden behind a large piece of coral. Their voices inside the tank were muffled, and only those closest to the tank could be understood. Melodia was content hiding behind the large coral for the rest of the day had it not been for the pudgy little child beginning to tap on the glass. The vibration that echoed through the tank shook her to her core. The fish darted all around her, panicked and anxious as the reverberating knocking pulsated through her ears. Rolling her eyes, Melodia felt it best to give the spoiled brat what she wanted to make her go away.
Pushing off from the rocky bed of the tank, the mermaid swam over the coral and was greeting by a resonating echo of gasps. Green eyes studied each and every face that stared back at her as her tail swished in the water, helping her to float in front of the crowd. The pudgy faced little girl squealed and looked back at her mother with a look of glee as Melodia swam right up against the tank and placed a hand on the glass where the little girl's hand was. Melodia wasn't smiling, but she had an inquisitive look on her face as the little girl jumped up and down. Glancing at the mother of the child, her gaze darkened and narrowed, and visibly unsettled the mother. She caught the look in the mother's gaze as the woman saw the gills along Melodia's neck. She seemed greatly disturbed by Melodia's appearance, almost fearful.
Mermaids weren't real, right? Melodia, to them, was nothing more than a woman in a fish suit that could stay under water for a very long time. This mother, however, was beginning to believe that Melodia was actually a real mermaid, and that thought disturbed her mother than anything else.
Mel pushed off the glass and did a few flips in the water, her fins touching the surface of the water, and flicking water at a few of the people standing close. This is what they wanted to see, right? They wanted to be mystified, and Melodia was doing the only thing she knew how... swimming around and being a mermaid. Fiery red hair moved with her as she bobbed and weaved through the coral and around the fish like she was playing some sort of game with the creatures in the water.
As the crowd began to thin out, Melodia slowed her swimming and splashing about. Green eyes narrowed on the last few patrons watching her, transfixed on the sight in front of them. Yawning, she waved a hand to them, urging them to leave and go see other sights at the carnival. Surely her show wasn't that fascinating. What more could they want from her? It didn't help that she wasn't exactly wearing anything. That's really what lured the male patrons to her tank, wasn't it? Red hair barely managed to cover over her chest, not that Melodia complained. In the ocean, clothes were only for the land dwellers.
