WHO: Koen Boulstridge and Mary Little
WHAT: A professor asks a dancer for a moment of her time
WHEN: Now
RATING: Probably low. Koen is a gentleman.
STATUS: Incomplete

Koen was...nervous. Over the past few months, he'd built himself a comfortable niche at the carnival; his "students" tended to come and go as they pleased, with the exception of Tobias, but he didn't much mind. He'd made several friends, and had found that it was...simple. It was simple to be happy here in this place, with these people, most of whom were good and all of whom were interesting...it was easy to forget the betrayal of his now ex-wife, and their loss, and his inability to have a child.

Tonight, however, as he donned his best suit and carefully combed out his hair, he was nervous. He hadn't done this sort of thing in twenty years! Over that, really. He'd been with his wife for that long in marriage, but he'd dated her beforehand...but there was a person here, an extraordinary little woman, and he could not hide from himself that the feelings he was beginning to have for her surpassed the friendship that they'd developed. She was clever, and funny, and brilliant in the kitchen...and he quite admired her, for all that she had accomplished, and could accomplish still. She had a spirit of tenacity about her, and though she was small in size, she was large in heart.

He strode across the collection of trailers to one he was very familiar with, now; he'd made reservations weeks ago, when he'd decided in his mind that he was going to do this, at Gramercy Tavern. It was quite a fine place, and he'd gotten lucky in that they'd had a cancellation right before he'd called; otherwise, he'd been told, he wouldn't have been able to get a seat at all, not in the dining room. He thanked the hostess that had assisted him profusely...

He was here. Flowers in one hand, he lifted the other and knocked on the door.

"Miss Mary?" He cleared his throat. "Miss Mary, are you home?"

The little woman was putting finishing touches on some of her cookie gifts she was going to give the cookie eating populace of the carnival. The last ribbon was tied when she swiped a hand across her forehead and heard the knock on her door. Stepping off her stool, wondering who was at her door she was surprised to hear the voice of the professor. Her heart skipped for a moment and she hurried even more.

"Coming." Her voice lilted over the hum-bum-bum of Bing Crosby that seemed to have become a permanent feature in her trailer. She opened the door a second later. She looked a little frazzled, having put together so many cookie boxes today, but her eyes sparkled their pale blue and she looked relaxed in jeans and a sweater. When she saw how nice he looked she immediately raised a hand to brush out her hair.

"Wow, Professor, you're looking very dapper this evening. What's going on?" She felt butterflies flutter in her stomach for a moment though she didn't know why exactly.

"Ah...well...good evening, Miss Mary..." Koen had never felt so...tongue-tied around her before, and he held out the flowers while he tried to recover his ability to speak. He'd been practicing for ages, but now that it was time it seemed that the words just wouldn't come out...

"W-well...I was wondering if...if perhaps you would be willing to accompany me to the city tonight. For...dinner." A pause, and Koen nervously dabbed at his face with his pocket handkerchief.

"You know...I had this whole thing worked out. I've been practicing for weeks." The man smiled, a little, though his cheeks were pink. "But...it has been a very long time since I have approached a woman to ask for the pleasure of her company...Miss Mary, I wish to...to take you to dinner. As...as a date. I would be...very happy, if you would agree to accompany me..."

Mary stood there puzzled for a moment as she seemed to tumble over his words. This wasn't what she was used to from him. He was usually very eloquent. When he held the flowers out to her that was when things started to come together for her, though not entirely. She took the flowers, wide-eyed at them as she held them to her and took in the scent of them, trying to think of why this kind of scene seemed so familiar to her.

He got through his last sentence before it clicked and she let out a yeep, her heart jumping into her throat. She couldn't believe this was really happening to her and that he had meant to come here, had planned this.

"You...you...you..." She had to take a breath. "You want to take me...out? On a...date?" Those butterflies went haywire in her stomach and up into her throat making it difficult to think for a moment.

"Of course! I mean, that would be fantastic!" Her face broke into a smile, though she seemed almost in tears just by the entire overwhelming thing. Someone was asking to take her out, he'd brought flowers and was dressed up nicely.

"Tonight? What time? I have to get ready!" What was she going to wear!

Koen's face split into a relieved--and delighted--smile, when Mary accepted his invitation to dinner; at her questions, he laughed softly, the tension seeping out of his body.

"I knew that it would be a surprise for you, so I made reservations at Gramercy Tavern for several hours from now...their dinner crowd goes until quite late, and I wanted to give you plenty of time, you see. Miss Mary, don't fuss..."

In an impromptu gesture, he took her free hand, lifting it up as he bent down to press it to his lips.

"You will look radiant, no matter what you choose to wear. You always do."

"OH thank goodness...otherwise I was going to be rushing around like a maniac." Because she HAD to go brag to Judas before she went anywhere! Plus she would need help picking out something to wear.

Her heart fluttered again as he took her hand and kissed it. "I'll try not too...but I've never had to chance to fuss like this." She was still having a hard time believing this was happening, but that was why she needed the time to absorb it all.

Her cheeks went pink as he spoke and she shook her head. "Keep talking like that, Professor and I'm gonna have a hard time not bursting into song." Mary laughed softly, there was a tune already running in her head and she could hardly force down the words.

"Your voice is just as beautiful as the rest of you, Miss Mary..." Koen smiled, and released Mary's hand as he straightened again. "Please! Go and get ready. Though you could come with me just as you are, and you would still be the most beautiful woman in all of New York..."

He fingered the box in his pocket, almost subconsciously. He hoped that she liked the gift he was going to give her; he'd chosen it because it was adorable, and reminded him of her without being too overtly pretentious. He wanted her to enjoy it...

"I will wait here, Miss Mary. Do not trouble yourself about me...I will be content until you return."

This was all almost too much to bear and they hadn't even gone out yet! She just hoped her excitement didn't peak too early. Or scare him off, which would be worse.

"Gosh...Ko, I don't even know how to respond to that!" Her cheeks were flushed as pink as they could and that smell that perfumed the air around her normally was all vanilla and spice and full of promises. "Right. Yes. Getting ready! At least come in and sit." Mary realized suddenly she'd had him standing out there and she moved out of the door way to run into the kitchen to find a vase. She wasn't even sure she OWNED a vase. She found a cream colored pitcher that would suffice and filled that with water so her flowers wouldn't wilt.

"I'll be just a moment!" Depositing the makeshift vase on the table she hurried to the back of her trailer where her room was and took a moment to breathe jump excitedly up and down. Then she knew she had to get to work!

The soft tones of her voice could be heard singing along to a music no one else could hear as she pulled herself together. "Are the stars out tonight, I don't know if it's cloudy or briiight, for I only have eyes, for you, dear..." It took her a bit but she finally decided that she good enough to go out. Taking a deep breath, she stepped out, just putting a finishing touch of a necklace to complete her outfit.

"Just gotta grab my coat and we'll be in business."

Koen was struck dumb, when Mary came out of her bedroom; scooping up her hand again, he bowed low once more over it. She was radiant...beautiful. He had always known she would be, of course, because she was...there was something about her that simply glowed, from the inside out. It made him hardly able to breathe, sometimes...

"Miss Mary...you are..." The teacher paused, then laughed, a hint of color rising to his cheeks.

"You are so beautiful that...I seem to be at a loss for words. Come..." He pulled her coat out and assisted her into it, then took her hand.

"I hope you do enjoy the evening."

The ride into the city was an easy drive, and an uneventful one; it was late enough that most of the rush hour traffic had passed, and late enough that all the lights and brightness of New York were visible. And Koen couldn't help but cradle that small, precious hand in his own as they rode...he was content to sit in silence, as long as Mary was by his side.

"You are going to give me a complex. I'm gonna start going around expecting this sort of treatment!" She couldn't remember the last time any one had complimented her so much and not wanted anything from her. And she was sure that Ko was WAY too nice and WAY too old fashioned to expect anything from her. Though really, she found she wouldn't mind if he did. Of course, that was the succubus, hungry inside her, talking.

"Did I forget to mention that you are simply toooo amazing?" This was just so much more then she had ever hoped for. Sure, she had always wanted it to go this way. Dating. The most she could of hoped for was someone who would at least open the door for her every now and then. But, not she was getting the royal treatment. And she liked it.

"If you're there, I can't see why I wouldn't."

The ride into New York was lovely, she always loved the lights and the way they stood out against the glassy blackness of buildings. Every now and then she would squeeze his hand gently just to remind herself that they were really here.

He felt...protective of her. This tiny, lovely, intelligent, vivacious woman, who baked and sang and laughed. She was so sweet...and he was attracted to her in a way he hadn't been attracted to anyone since his wife.

When they arrived at the restaurant, he jumped out of the cab to open the door for her, and helped her out; settling the tab with the man (and getting his card, to call when they were ready to return to the carnival), he escorted her inside. They were seated almost immediately, and Koen found himself flushing as he pulled out the chair for her...he hadn't really planned what to say, now.

"So..." He settled down and opened the menu, glancing at the choices. "I must admit, Miss Mary...it has been...a very long time since I have done something like this. I was...married, for a long time...but...you are very..."

He paused, then cleared his throat.

"...You are unlike any woman I have ever met..."

Mary hadn't prepared herself for the idea of being out in public. It wasn't that she cared much when she was by herself, but she had forgotten to warn Koen that people would most likely stare. She only hoped people would be too polite to do it here.

She removed her coat and took the offered seat. She wasn't entirely wrong, she had gotten a couple stares when she had walked in and she felt nervous enough already. The menu was glanced over and she smiled at the choices, this looked amazing.

"I've never done this, so if that makes you feel better..." At least if they were admitting that they were unaccustomed to this kind of thing then maybe they could figure it out together.

The raven haired girl looked up blushing pink, smiling brightly.

"Yeah, well...I am a little odd..." A little...get it? "I'm surprised and pleased you asked me out, actually. I thought maybe you...weren't comfortable with me." Which she wouldn't of worried about. Often people were disturbed by her.

"Not comfortable with you, Mary? On the contrary, I find you...delightful." Koen cleared his throat again, looking down at the menu for a moment before glancing up at the small, lovely woman seated across from him once more.

"I confess that at first I was startled...but only because they had put you into that 'freak' tent. Being small does not make you a freak...a genetic anomaly does not make you some sort of mutant. You are a lovely, charming woman, and I wish that they would make better use of your talents. Your baking, for instance...the pie you brought me was fantastic."

A waiter arrived, and offered them both a glass of the house wine; Koen debated for a moment, then nodded towards their glasses, and both were filled. And it was quite good, for house wine...perhaps he would order a bottle.

"Perhaps we should turn our attention to the mundane matters of the moment, Miss Mary...do you see anything that appeals to you, on the menu?"

"Ahhh, so it's the concept you're not comfortable with. Well, they didn't put me there. I did. At the carnival I was at before it was pretty much that or...well...nothing." Or something worse then being put on display, but she didn't want to ruin their dinner with that sort of thinking.

"I appreciate you think that way, Professor. Not many people do. I enjoy baking, I don't know if I could do it for everyone, though I guess I practically do." She now returned her attention to her menu and smiled nicely as the waiter filled their glasses.

"Oh, just about everything. This place looks fantastic."
