“Don’t be daft! Snape would never agree to it!”
“Wait and see, Remus!” With those parting words, Lily Evans flounced off in search of her other best friend.
---
He knew they were planning something, from the sneaky glances and whispered conversations.
And now, he was in for it.
“Come on, Sevy!” Lily tugged his robe sleeve.
Lupin, who was standing beside her, stifled something resembling a snort. Snape scowled.
But because he loved the girl, as he had since the first time he’d seen her in the park doing magic, he let himself be dragged along into the Shrieking Shack.
Severus stiffened as he entered, feeling the temperature drop a few degrees once inside the shack, wondering what the hell a couple of third-years were doing in the creepy house. Even full-grown wizards were afraid of this place, much less immature teenaged wizards. What was more, they were forbidden to step foot inside. That wasn’t an issue—the possibility of getting caught was.
It was just like those bloody Gryffindors to ram headfirst into things, never making calculated moves. He, on the other hand, preferred to strategise first. Honestly, even Crabbe and Goyle would know that sneaky escapades needed detailing to the very last bit, to avoid being caught. Lily, however, didn’t seem to have as many inhibitions as he and had suggested offhandedly that morning that they should visit the Shack on their first Hogsmeade trip. She was now inspecting some brown gunk on the walls.
Sensible Lupin, supposed to keep Potter and Black in line in school, had agreed with her, no questions asked. He didn’t seem too perturbed as well, Snape noted. But he was probably just pretending, typical Gryffindor bravery and all that. Now, it was his turn to snort.
“What do you think this is?” Lily spoke to no one in particular, prodding at the sticky-looking thing with her wand. A red spark shot out from her wand.
“I don’t think you should be doing—” Snape started.
The brown gunk flew towards Snape’s face.
“That.” That disgusting thing was indeed sticky and it smelt worse than Glumbumble fluid. That was an experience he’d though was the worst ever, but this took the cake.
“Severus! Sorry!” Lily said anxiously. Then, she snickered. Moments later, it became a full-blown guffaw. She laughed until her cheeks turned pink, tears streaming down her face.
And because he loved her, he didn’t mind. He did mind though, Lupin’s amused smirk which he saw through the gunk on his face.
When she had composed herself, she muttered another quick apology and began to siphon off the gunk with her wand.
“There. All better!” she announced, satisfied with her work. “Well, we’ve seen the shack. We’ve ought to be heading back to Hogsmeade now.”
As they were heading back to Hogsmeade, Lily said, “See, Severus? We didn’t get caught! Honestly, you don’t need to worry all the time!”
“Oh really, Miss Evans?” A stony-faced Professor McGonagall appeared behind them. Lily gave a weak smile while Lupin gulped audibly. Snape’s heart sank.
Apparently, it was to be their first—and last—Hogsmeade trip until the end of their third year.
