Ever since Potter had given her this likely mad and completely futile mission, Tracey had been playing catch up. The only thing that Tracey could say for sure after a few weeks was that the law made no fucking sense. It was filled with strange words like habeas corpus, and in absentia, and all sorts of other words that sounded more like spells than definitions.
Tracey could only figure out that she was a bloody idiot. Tracey sat at the dining room table every day, even though her back and her legs practically sang in agony. Her body was still healing, and the long hours she was pulling were not helping, but the depths to which she didn't understand terrified her. It kept her in that chair, reading through books, consulting dictionaries and scribbling notes. Tracey couldn't say she'd made any progress. It was all mush inside her head.
It was starting to feel incredibly hopeless to her. Tracey didn't see how she could possibly defend herself, or Theo, or Draco and Pansy. She simply didn't know anything. Finch-Fletchley was going to wipe the floor with her, and they were all going to go to prison.
The very thought of her or anyone she cared about going to Azkaban made her feel sick inside. It made her bend her nose to the grindstone even harder. If she could just read the next paragraph, the page, the next chapter, it would all start making sense.
Perhaps then she could start thinking of a plan.
