The oily light from a crayon candelabra, made from three crayons pierced by hanger-wire suspended from a file cabinet drawer, flooded the small manager office with a barely-there sort of golden hue. It was what they used after a certain hour, when battery life needed to be saved for emergencies. Right now, her brother was on the hallway couch on his watch, and while it may sometimes feel like it, alone time with Matt didn't qualify, when they could burn a couple Crayolas for a half-hour each.
The mild scent of cucumber melon was a welcome change from the grime that clung to her skin from the last few days. Showers were a distant memory now, same with baths; wet wipes and dry shampoo served as sponge-cleaning when they had the time and security. It took longer and was in no way comfortable, especially with the current temperature barely hitting fifty, but it did the trick. And it would feel good to wear new, clean(ish) clothes rather than put on the dirty ones, considering the lot they'd looted from the store downstairs.
But even with the chill and clean jeans, she wasn't in the biggest hurry to get dressed.
