Dawn had taken almost an hour to fully saturate an overcast sky with enough light to be called 'day'. Sometimes it took less, but the air coming in from the slit in Katya's office/permanent living space smelled not only of rot, but rain. It was charged with moisture and promises of lots of wet weather before long.
Perfect day to have spike-clearing duty, then spend hours on the roof with a rifle.
After rubbing the sleep from her eyes and nursing a cup of lukewarm (and particularly horrible tasting) instant coffee, the former science teacher-turned-sniper gathered herself, her clothes, and her shouldered weapon out to the tiled halls lined with former classrooms filled with sleeping former students.
"Time to wake!" chirped the small Russian woman, using her free hand to rap on each closed door three times as she passed. As unofficial alarmclock for the second floor, she rarely took her job very seriously. Those that were hungry would rise and gather in the auditorium to eat. Those that did not would go hungry until the evening 'meal'. Most didn't bother to sleep in for more than a couple days.
As expected, Judah's half-smiling, if tired face greeted her from the bottom of the stairwell to the first floor. Their morning chores were usually together, given their prior kinship. "You smile like you always have new toothbrush," she gifted him a tired attempt at the same in return, then choked down another sip of garbage-coffee. "Or found bottle of wine for my birthday, yes?"
