Re: Saturday: 11:00
To say Tommy was confident was the understatement of the year. He all but strutted out to the middle of the stage, glad he'd been able to snag the first audition spot. Of course he was great at any time but it wouldn't hurt to get the Warblers while they were awake, well fed and not bored to tears by a million other auditions. He wasn't sure what would be over the top so he'd just dressed carefully that morning so that he was comfortable but not slobbish and dressed nicely without being over the top. He'd been practising his audition for a while now and knew he had it down pat, including the confident walk that still showed he could move smoothly.
"Hi!" he said brightly, squinting slightly to make out the older boys. "My name's Tommy Donovan and I'm a freshman. Today I'll be performing Stronger by Kelly Clarkson."
He'd had a hard time deciding what song to do but he thought this one showed off his voice and it was a fun song to perform, although the last time he'd sung it outside of his house was when he'd been "dragged" up with some of his girl friends at a party to do a performance. Besides, Kelly was one of his heroes. If she could make it from Idol beginnings, so could he!
Licking his lips, he took a second to compose himself, quietly wishing he had a proper microphone like in the video to complete the act, before he started to sing.
You know the bed feels warmer Sleeping here alone You know I dream in color And do the things I want
You think you got the best of me Think you've had the last laugh Bet you think that everything good is gone Think you left me broken down Think that I'd come running back Baby you don't know me, cause you're dead wrong
He was conscious not to stand too still or bop around too much and found himself unconsciously tapping the beat on his thigh with one finger. He could have been just as easily standing in front of his mirror at home, imitating Kelly herself with the facial expressions and slight head movements. Once he got to the chorus, however, he was able to break out a bit more and move around, but not anything that would disrupt his breathing.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger Stand a little taller Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone What doesn't kill you makes a fighter Footsteps even lighter Doesn't mean I'm over cause you're gone
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stronger Just me, myself and I What doesn't kill you makes you stronger Stand a little taller Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone
Now that he was in his groove, the building could have fallen down around him and he'd have kept on singing. He toned down the movement, concentrating on showing his voice and love of performing in more subtle ways. Every so often he would glance over at the boys he'd found out were in charge but from where he was standing, it was hard to judge their reactions.
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone, When I'm alone
He finished the song on a more composed note, bringing his performance to a close, but he waited a second longer before he smiled at his audience. "Thank you for listening," he said with a grin.
