Oh, this is so absolutely awesome! I am in love with the late-Victorian perfection. The mill job and the diphtheria, the survival of not the fittest but the canniest, the dim, cheap, surreal, feel of the music hall (with Charlie and his adoring girl, and the darling Mrs Peters), Narcissa's and Tom's pitch-perfect sprititistic act ...

And Minerva. Oh, my heart rate. Corsets, hair, intelligence, and again that perfect late 19th-century shrewd woman's way of navigating conventions and opportunities, of keeping up appearances, the better to do as she pleases. I also love that she has quite some criminal energy here. And a nice taste in houses. And a way of getting Severus to react as she wants him to, in various ways.

"Enjoying the view?" he snapped before he could stop himself; channelling embarrassment into anger was something he'd been doing since childhood.
"Don't flatter yourself," she snapped back, straightening at once and glaring at him. Her eyes sparked with her own anger, and her lifted chin revealed her pale neck, and it was all he could do not to grab rough hold of her and kiss her. That would shock her, the old cat.
-- Love this exchange.

Narcissa, too, is gorgeous. So is the fivesome. Narcissa with a strap-on is an image that stays with one, and not in a bad way at all.

By her Majesty the Empress of India's ample knickers and all the oysters of Torquay, I will be re-reading this.
