3:41 am - Cronenberg's The Fly to transform into an opera

Cronenberg's The Fly to transform into an opera

Canadian director David Cronenberg has teamed up with tenor Placido Domingo and Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore to create an opera based on Cronenberg's 1986 movie, The Fly.

The unlikely trio made an official announcement Friday in Paris saying the co-production between Theatre du Chatelet in Paris and the Los Angeles Opera would open in Paris July 1, 2008, and then move to Los Angeles in September.

"It's a magical reliving of a part of my life, this time playing a completely different role in the creation of a very different animal," Cronenberg said.

The 1986 movie, starring Jeff Goldblum as a scientist who slowly transforms into a fly, was based on a 1957 short story by George Langelaan. Cronenberg's other movies include the award-winning A History of Violence, Spider, eXistenZ and Dead Ringers.

The two-act opera was conceived by Shore, who called the plot an "intimate story" of love and death. Shore worked on the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

"I thought it was a very good opera subject for staging and I wanted to work with something I knew," said Shore at the press conference. He added that Cronenberg's movie provided a "canvas to work on to create something new."

The work will feature three main characters — a lead baritone, a tenor and a mezzo-soprano — along with a chorus and a 75-piece orchestra.

Domingo, who called it a "magical collaboration," will act as the opera's musical director.

"It has long been my dream to unite the worlds of film with those of opera," said the tenor in a statement.

Others working on the production include playwright David Henry Hwang, who previously worked with the 63-year-old director on the 1993 film M. Butterfly. Hwang will pen the opera's libretto while Denise Cronenberg, the director's sister, is the costume designer.

A report in Saturday's Globe and Mail newspaper said the Canadian Opera Company was first approached to mount the production. The COC is located in Cronenberg's hometown, Toronto.

COC general director Richard Bradshaw said the fees involved were too much for the company. He indicated, though, that the opera could still make its way to Toronto, perhaps in the summer of 2009.

It sounds very interesting.
Too bad I live really really far away and I won't be able to see it. :-(

Ok, I really really like what Lincoln had in mind. It sounds different and interesting and it’s definitely a completely new approach to the story. Why would they want to repeat themselves?
Hollywood!
I still don’t believe the remake will be made. We will see.

By the way, they are considering Johnny Depp? That would be so cool!

2:38 pm - Cronenberg talks about "Fly" 200?

zoesmith
I found an interesting article in which Cronenberg shares his opinion about the new "Fly" remake.

Here is the link: http://horror.about.com/b/a/204954.htm

I'll paste the article in case the link doesn't work.

From Staci Wilson,
Your Guide to Horror Books and Movies.

Cronenberg Thinks ‘Fly’ 2006 Wings Should Be Clipped

When I interviewed David Cronenberg yesterday (for A History of Violence, not a horror movie) there was a bit of downtime while the crew was getting the cameras ready to roll, so I took the moment to let him know about our Fly and Fly II sweepstakes and asked him the same question I’ve asked all of you: “Who should star in the upcoming 2006 remake?” Cronenberg very matter-of-factly said, “It don’t think it should be remade. So there’s your answer: No one.” (Photo of me and Cronenberg courtesy of StarLens.com)

Far be it from me to point out to the preeminent auteur that his own 1986 version of The Fly was a remake (of a 1958 film starring David Hedison and Vincent Price). And besides, I have to agree with him… Cronenberg’s The Fly is really the ultimate telling of the terrifying tale of technology gone terribly wrong.

Perhaps Cronenberg will get his wish. Not much has happened since the new Fly remake was announced two years ago by Fox Searchlight. Written and to be directed by Todd Lincoln (maker of three obscure short films), it seems this project might just be dead on the windowsill despite the projected 2006 release date.

What do you think?
I believe that Cronenberg is a genious and that his remake is a masterpiece. I think that the movie is perfect as it is but I'd really love to see what the new writer and director has to give us (if he actually gets the chance). Maybe it's just me but this new movie could make more people appreciate the power of this story.
But I have a strange feeling that the movie might not be made after all. It has been at least 3 years since the announcement....

3:52 pm - Goerge Langelaan

zoesmith
Some time ago I watched a Documentary on TV about the five Fly movies.

It seems that it's not a book that inspired the movies but a short story written by Goerge Langelaan in the 50s called The Fly . The story was published in Playboy and won the best fiction award for the magazine in 1957.

There might be a way to find the short story. It could be published elsewhere too. After all the movies were very successful! As soon as I know ow sth I'll post it.

There you go. :-)
