"Powers?" asked Adrienne. "What kind of powers?" Naturally, she would attach herself to that in the midst of everything that was shared. Not to seem overeager for the wrong reasons, she softened her response with personal reasoning. "I'm also from a place where some people have special powers."
When Lois inquired about the earring and her desire to go back, Adrienne reached up and tucked hair behind ear to show off hers. She had already considered it. "I want to stay here. I need to stay. I don't exist anymore back home," she explained. "I died."
She listened and thought about Lois' experience of going home to live her life for a short stretch of time and then returning to the hotel. Adrienne had to wonder if it only returned people to the point in time at which they were taken or if it ever went further back. And if the latter was possible, whether it was possible to inflict change on trajectory. Then again, Lois did say that while she was home, she remembered nothing of the hotel. It stood to reason that nothing of what she knew now would be remembered either. Although Adrienne had to wonder whether her own powers would have any different impact on that.
Lest she stayed quiet too long in thought, she took a quick drink of her wine to cover for the moment. "That was thoughtless. You shouldn't have had to learn from anyone else about the departure of your own husband."
