"I used to think they couldn't, before I met Hal," Tom said, brow furrowed as he watched the milkshake and straw show he was putting on. He barely noticed the sound of the electric grinder for the coffee beans. He was too busy thinking about how to describe Hal and how he'd changed everything.
"Every day, right, he sets up this big thing of dominoes. And it would be so fun to knock the first one over, it's so fancy the way he does it. So careful. And then he just... puts them all away again. He never knocks them down. And he's like that with everything, he's so fussy and careful and he can't do anything that feels good or else he's afraid it'll all go falling down like dominoes."
He looked up finally. "I know they can change, it just takes a lot more work than most of them care about doing."
