Bucky was exhausted. He hadn't slept since last week. With everything that had been going on, between shit appearing and people disappearing, there hadn't been time to take a breath. Much less try to close his eyes and get any sleep. It would have been easier to try the first few days when Steve had been around but then when he'd gone missing- He'd done his best not to panic. Or at least, he tried to look like he wasn't. It must have worked to some extent since Peggy had almost sounded surprised that he wasn't as worried about Steve disappearing as she would have thought. But it was easy to mask his feelings over the network. If she'd been able to see him face-to-face, she would have seen through him in an instant. But they both had their hands full dealing with everything else that was happening. Which was fine because he didn't need Peggy worrying about him too. How many times had Steve been through this very thing? Bucky could manage it once. The hotel had always brought him back. He had to trust that it would return Steve to him. Though 'managing' was used loosely. When he got to Zemo's door, it had been days since he'd gotten any proper sleep. It showed in the heavy, dark circles under his eyes but mostly in his movements. Consciously, he knew he was moving. His body had been trained to continue on even when his mind wasn't willing. He'd marched through the door off memory, barely registering that the door had been unlocked for him. He had messaged Zemo before coming down. It was a surprise whenever he did, which was more often lately Bucky noticed. Closing the door behind him, he locked it out of habit. The smell of tea woke him up a little. He closed his eyes and inhaled it, enjoying the scent for a short moment before going further into the room. Zemo had gone through a bit of trouble himself on the first day but thankfully, no lasting damage had been done. Except for Bucky's pride. Of all the things to break a spell, he'd never expected singing to be one of them. There were many things he was skilled in. Music was not one of them. "Go knockin' on any strange doors lately?" Bucky didn't wait two seconds before teasing him. He made his way over to where Zemo had already put the tea together, actually eager for a cup. Hands in his pockets, he stood and waited patiently. |
