It might have seemed a bit odd to a lot of other people, but the Nein was sort of surrounded by a certain level of odd most of the time anyway. And Caleb chasing Frumpkin through a little patch of sunny grass, as a matching Bengal, was not even close to the weirdest thing they had ever experienced. Besides, Caleb liked making sure that his cat was happy with life and socialization was an incredibly important aspect of that. Without a lot of other cat-friends (or bird friends or maybe even a dog friend), it was up to him to find ways of keeping Frumkin from getting listless. And, anyway, anyone who casually wandered by would only see two cats trying to catch each other's tails in the tree-dappled clearing and occasionally getting distracted by a grasshopper or a bee. It was also, for Caleb, a kind of mental freedom. His brain collected and cataloged everything, every moment of the day, non-stop. Something was always being processed or filed into its appropriate box. For as often as having a perfect memory worked to his advantage, it was also a terrible curse. The only time his mind ever shut off was when he slipped into a simpler form. Going from someone who had a hundred thoughts at once going through his head, to something whose only thought was the warm sun and the joy of playing around with a friend. It was something he needed a lot more of. Frumpkin still knew Molly's scent from yards away. Caleb was not quite used to all his senses in this form. But when the slightly smaller cat diverted from stalking an enormous bumblebee through the grass, Caleb followed. For all intents, the two cats were identical. Caleb was a smidge larger, the black markings were a bit more auburn, and the markings around his two front legs were noticeably different. But if a person hadn't paid really astute attention, they most likely wouldn't have been able to tell which was which. And, presently, Caleb wasn't really of a mind to care. All he knew was that one friend led him to another friend and generally speaking friends were excellent to have around. |
