Ned, on the other hand, had grown up almost completely on his own after being dropped off at school when he was eight. It was there that he'd started baking pies in the middle of the night because their scent and their warmth reminded him of his mother.
"You usually have to cook it again." Ned explained, trying to find the balance between explaining things simply enough that he would be understood but not sounding like he was talking to a child. "We have a machine that does it for you. But we'll start with the tea, it takes longer." Ned had the thought to use the electric kettle near the coffee maker but he thought the stovetop might be a better place to start. He could show Regulus how to use it without burning anything down.
He took up the kettle and filled it with water, letting Regulus just watch for now. "When you need to turn on the flame, you turn this knob'til it starts to click." Ned did just that, letting the stove click until the flame caught, "then turn it back the other way until the flame is as high as you want it." He set the kettle over the flame and then stepped back a little while he explained which knobs went to which burners and what the ones for the oven did, even adding that the stove was gas powered, so if the power went out it would still work, they would just need a match to light it.
While waiting for the water to heat Ned would start tucking things back into drawers and shutting cabinets. Realizing Regulus wasn't going to follow without direction he pointed him toward a cabinet of cookies and candies that seemed to have been emptied. "Why don't you start putting those back in the cabinet so it will close again."
