Of course she was happy, so he was too. He was joking with her, of course, unable to be too serious right now given how heavy everything else had been. They needed some levity and they needed each other. He was content in the moment, not needing anything more, even as she got so affectionate and sweet that it made him hurt. He didn't deserve her, especially not after failing her.
And he had. He'd failed and paid dearly for it. He would carry the reminder forever, but it was something he could learn to live with, just like the rest. Compartmentalization was nothing new for her, and it wasn't for him either. Maybe neither would be the same, but maybe that was for the best.
