Sirius had stopped counting days ages back, maybe years ago, it was hard to tell. Keeping track of time wasn't something he was good at any longer, they told the days in new arrivals. You could always tell when someone new had been brought in due to the screaming. They all stopped eventually, the dementors saw to that. They'd had a new arrival just a few days earlier, and Sirius had curled in on himself, changing himself and trying to block the sound and the feeling of the dementors out as best he could. But it was never ending, the way it always was. Until suddenly it wasn't. Sirius didn't notice how quiet it was until the quiet was broken by the sudden shrill sound of a chime coming from somewhere. He winced at it lifting his head to see what was making it. None of it made sense to Padfoot. He shifted, getting unsteadily to his feet and looking around a large open room, with a counter at one end where the ringing was coming from. None of this made any sense and he didn't know what new torture they had derived for him but he could be certain that's what this was. Carefully he made his way closer to the ringing sound, uncertain of what it was or how to stop it. He'd long ago been stripped of his wand. Hesitantly he lifted up one end and heard a voice coming through it. "Wh- Who -" He started and stopped himself several times his voice rough with disuse and the sheer strangeness of the situation. He listened to the message until it played itself out and the thing beside it seemed to come to life. It was like no magic he'd ever seen, it must be muggle - there was no other explanation for it, examining it carefully he poked at different letters until the form was complete and he was given a room number. It sent a jolt of fear down his spine, was he trading one prison for another? He didn't know but he didn't intend to find out. There didn't seem to be any guards on site, though perhaps this place was like Azkaban, but if it was full of muggle items surely now. He glanced hesitantly toward the door - seeing light coming in through the windows. It was bright and sunny out there and he couldn't resist in the end. Maybe there were dementors out there waiting for him, maybe there weren't. But for the first time in years Sirius felt like he could breathe and he wanted to feel the sun on his face. Running out of the hotel Sirius bolted through the open grass savoring the feeling of the open sky over head and the warmth of the sun. It was everything he'd been missing, like a balm to his soul he could finally breathe again and exhaled slowly. In the end Sirius didn't get to enjoy his new found freedom for long. As some sort of green streak hit him from behind, sudden and sharp, he crumpled to the ground and the world was gone. |
