Diana had been screaming before Thor had even moved, telling him not to, warning him away, but as seemed to always be the case with her, Diana was too little and too late. She had always thought, on that dark night in 1910, that she had experienced the worst pain of her life. How could it be otherwise, with Steve Trevor’s plane aflame above her in the sky, the knowledge that she would never see him again? She had, but she had not known that then, and the pain had swallowed her whole.
She had been a fool in 1910, with no idea the darkness and fury that could exist within her, and it turned out that Ares had very little idea of it himself. Her screams faded with the light in Thor’s eyes, and she watched. Waited. His chest did not rise again, and his eyes were open, sightless and staring. The brown one was having some sort of fit, now that the technology within it had nothing to connect to, and Diana knew he was gone.
So were her bonds, and Diana was on her feet. She had not thought about the motion, about the power needed to dispel her brother’s bonds and free her, but in her fury, all she had was power. She had slaughtered nearly an entire army the last time she had been this angry, and there was no army standing between herself and her brother. Diana had gained her full height, and she did not hesitate as she moved across this makeshift battlefield.
She was a daughter of Zeus, her bracelets used to focus and direct that power... but she did not need them, and now, this moment, she had never needed them less. There was gold lightning arcing between her fingers as she came for him, and she landed atop her brother with all the force she could muster. Her fingers were all but glowing as she drove her thumbs into his eyes, leaving ruined, red sockets behind. “We were in Hades, brother, where we always are when you visit me,” she growled, leaning into his ear to be heard over his screams.
“But you will not find such sweet peace from me. Not this time.” Ares was blind now, and it was his turn to fear. Diana would’ve seen it in his eyes if she hadn’t crushed them in his head, and she regained her feet only to kick him into the nearest building. She followed, and their fight continued. But her brother had been lamed, and Diana had never been more powerful in her life than now, this moment, when he had taken everything from her a second time. And yet she did not kill him. She left him blind, unable to even move, more bones broken than not... and then she spit in his face and left him to suffer. “As the humans say, brother... fuck you.”
Oddly, she felt guilty for cursing, even now, and all her rage left her as she turned from her blubbering brother. Thor’s body still lay where Ares had dropped him, and Diana crumpled there, too. Now there was only sorrow, and the tears she wasn’t sure would ever stop. She was nearly blind herself as she pulled Stormbreaker from his chest, and closed his eyes.
