Ben almost didn't even bother trying to pick up the phone. Fourteen years of not interacting with the world around him had left him pretty used to being passive to things happening around him. It rang and rang and rang though. After what felt like twenty rings he finally got sick of the sound and went up to the phone. Maybe if he concentrated all of his energy he could pick it up and at least hang up on whoever was letting it ring so long. It was surprisingly easy to pick up the phone, though. The lady was saying something about his baggage - he couldn't help but think are we talking emotional or physical because one's way more - and giving him a room number and he stood there, dumbfounded, listening. He didn't know he could pick up a phone anymore. He hung it up and then picked it up again, just for fun. He had no idea where he was, but he didn't think about that too much. The fact that he could touch things effortlessly was a lot more important right now. He spent a long time in the lobby, just nudging things around. He fluffed seat cushions. He rearranged pillows. Then, finally, he headed to the elevator. His room was on the sixth floor apparently, but he certainly wasn't in any hurry to get there. He hit all of the buttons, stopped on every floor, drunk on the power of being in control of where he went. |
