He tried to pull it together, for Krissy's sake as much as his own. Derek could see how this whole experience was making her feel and he didn't mean to put his baggage onto her, whoever she looked like. When she spoke about her parents being dead he looked up and felt the pit of his stomach hollow out in empathy.
"I'm sorry you lost your parents," he answered, still feeling a lump in his throat. "It's not easy when you're so young," and Derek knew that too. "I'm not even going to pretend this isn't the freakiest thing that's happened all month, which includes my being brought here," he told Krissy with a sad smile, "but in a strange way it's good. Maybe...maybe I'll get to see Paige's smile again, even if it's not exactly her," he said attempting to look on the bright side.
Did he want to talk about it? It wasn't usually Derek's strong point, but he wasn't averse to the company. At least that way he could get used to seeing Krissy around the place. "Sure, let's walk," he said with a nod of agreement. "As long as you really didn't hurt yourself?"
