“Oh. I’m not worried. I’d actually like to meet him. He sounds like a cool cat,” Wesley tipped his head back and threw him both a wink and a smile.
If there was a giant monkey walking around eating people, Wesley was sure that they’d hear screaming at least. And there’d be carnage of some kind around. Unless Kong was a fastidious eater and didn’t like leaving a mess behind. Still, there ought to be some kind of sign or clue to what had happened here. How could an entire city just up and disappear? Something felt off though and it wasn’t just the lack of any sign of life that was making him uneasy. He rubbed at his head anxiously. There was a feeling of panic rising in his chest and it frustrated him not to know why. He didn’t see anything immediately dangerous or threatening. Yet, his heart suddenly started to beat faster and he had the distinct feeling that they were being watched.
Then, heavy but kind hands landed on his shoulders and everything slowed down to normal again.
“It isn’t Wrigley field but it’ll do.” He pushed those worries away and nodded with renewed vigor. An empty city certainly wasn’t the worst thing. “Hey, at least there won’t be any lines at the bar, right?”
Or a bartender, come to find out. When they did find a small bar that looked interesting enough to venture in, it was as empty as the rest of the city. But Wes had snuck behind one bar already. What was one more? The stack of liquor on the shelves wasn’t as extensive as the hotel’s but it was good enough. He walked behind the counter and looted around for a few minutes before he resurfaced with five bottles, none of which he’d checked to see what they were.
The place was old but Wes didn’t even realize how old until he saw a beat-up jukebox in the corner. He took a mean swig from one of the long necked bottles without looking. “Mm, licorice.” Wes smacked his lips and held it out for Conrad if he wanted a taste. “Hey look, wanna see if that thing still works? Can’t be that much older than you and you hold up just fine.”
