Steve could put him back together, Buck thought with a small smile. He'd already done so in ways that Bucky could never be grateful enough for. But Bucky wasn't looking to get broken. He wanted to stay in one piece and actually be the useful one. Not the one barely holding it together with sticks and strings.
He winced at the apology, then shook his head quickly. "It wasn't your fault. I should have heard the asshole coming long before he got to you. And I'm not just saying that to make you feel better. Even if you were distracting me." Funny how quickly their afternoon had changed in such a short amount of time. "So much for shopping." Though he was getting a new outfit, wasn't he? Bucky turned and gave the clothes Zemo had brought back a curious look. At least it wasn't something with fur.
Zemo talking about his time in Sokovia reminded Bucky that the man had once had another life before this. That he'd had a family. A wife. A son. All of that had been taken from him. Bucky couldn't condone what he did or how he did it but he got why he'd gone to such lengths. And why he was still fueled by that anger now. He imagined what that life might have been like for him. It must have been a happy one. His mind ran a little wild at the thought of Zemo being a husband and father. He'd seen how the other man had been with the kids Karli's group had taken in. Bucky was so preoccupied with these thoughts, he barely noticed Zemo's fingers.
He'd been staring at Zemo when he asked if he'd miss him. Though he didn't answer at first, Bucky already knew what he would say. He inhaled deeply and on the exhale, he turned his stare to one of the walls. Only when Zemo was no longer in his line of sight, was he able to admit to anything. "It's not so bad having you around. When you aren't trying to kill off super soldiers, you're actually enjoyable. It's hard to find a guy with a dark sense of humor like mine. So yeah, I'd miss you." He looked at Zemo out of the corner of his eyes to see his reaction. It had been a bad idea to get Zemo involved but he'd done it. At the time, he'd just been desperate and even he'd had his doubts about the plan. "You surprised me."
