After that first day, spent wandering and getting acclimated, Ren found some comfort in the fact that he wasn't the only one here who spoke primarily Japanese. Naoki and Usagi both seemed friendly enough, but Ren knew he couldn't just communicate with the pair of them, either. His English wasn't great, but it was passable. Even still, he felt as though he needed to make an effort at learning more. He'd never thought to try this before, but Ren decided to first reach out to a Persona, to see if he could glean some unconscious knowledge from the metaverse. In doing so, he learned two very important things. It didn't work that way. More importantly, even if it could be done, he had no connection to the cognitive realm here. No matter how many times he reached out with his heart, or tried to take off his cognitive mask the way he'd done dozens of times already, the more it settled that he just felt... nothing there. Usually, he could feel a Persona emerge as it happened, no matter which one it was. Now, though, he felt (and probably looked) ridiculous, with his arm thrust out to one side in his bathroom mirror, looking for that familiar silhouette to appear over his shoulder. His clothes didn't change, Arsene didn't appear, and there wasn't even that warmth that came from his burning heart. Calling the project a failure (at least for now), he decided on doing things the more conventional way. The library had to have something he could use, right? Right. With that settled, he gathered his glasses, which were flung dramatically into the bath tub during his previous efforts, put them on, and headed out. He was dressed casually, in a t-shirt, open button-down shirt over that, and some jeans. His phone was tucked into his pocket and he was ready to go. It didn't take long to find his way, having memorized the route the day before. Coming to the crossroads that would decide his path, Ren turned toward the library, only to be interrupted by a loud, dramatic rumbling in his stomach. As he turned toward the kitchen, he muttered something to himself, shaking his head. 「私はそれが待たなければならないと思います。」 He got in line for breakfast after that, waited his turn and grabbed what he needed, a fruit cup and some eggs. Then he turned to go towards a table and didn't bump into anyone, but came close. Sidestepping his new companion, he muttered a quick apology. "ごめんなさい!" He said before catching himself, "Sorry! Sorry! Are you... ok?" Was that the right word? Was any of that right? Ah, mou. This was why Ann always did the talking when they met Americans or other English-speakers, even when they'd gone to Hawaii. |
