"Heroes?" Cassie gave a humorless laugh and, for a moment, wanted to cry. Instead, she just shook her head. "Heroes only exist in movies and comics. There's no one in charge, no government anymore. The aliens just send these waves that just...kill us. Until there's none of us left." And they had taken the kids - like her brother - which meant they must've needed them for something, but she had no idea what that might be.
"They're just going to hunt us all down and either kill us, or use us. I don't know - it's not like they're telling anyone." Like her. She was just a kid from Ohio, too old for them to take but just young enough for them to underestimate which had given her the chance to kill one of them before he killed her. "They took my brother. And other kids. Then they killed my dad and everyone else in the camp we were at - they shot them all first, then used some bomb to try and blast any survivors, but I managed to hide in a ravine. No one showed up to save the day."
