Lucky for him, Salim had arrived well before the sunset so there was just enough light filtering in through windows for him to find his way. The building was more than a little confusing and he could hear things coming from the shadows as he passed them. He glanced at his watch but it was still set for the middle of America and he had no idea what the time zone was here. That would be the first thing he'd have to figure out, but the sun was going down by the time he got to his room. Salat first. Once he was in his room Salim found there were two beds, both had a few items on them. One had a rolled-up rug that would be perfect for prayers and a Qur'an. Clearly, that was his assigned bed. He moved to open the windows to let in the last of the light then checked the phone on his bed. Already loaded with a quibla finder and salat time apps. And it was now Ramadan? The last time he looked it was heading toward winter? There had to be a reason but there wasn't time just then for him to wonder too long on it. It was almost maghrib and he had to perform his ablutions before praying. Once he was cleaned, Salim laid out the rug angled toward the Kabbah and took a moment to get himself into the right frame of mind before he began. It was a calming ritual for him now. Before, he'd always prayed out of obligation. He was going through the motions of being a good Muslim. Of being a good man...at least a good man by the standards his family had set. Now, he was praying with his whole heart and he knew that his God could hear him. He might not answer him, but He heard him. At the end of his final rakat Salim sat up on his heels and turned his head first to his right, then to his left. "As-salāmu ʿalaikum wa-raḥmatu-llah" |
