"Friends of yours." Elektra pulled her hand back and sat up, crossing her long legs at the knee. "Allies. They helped save your beloved city." From me. "I'm surprised they're not here, too." She glanced toward the door, a tiny part of her yeaning to bolt, to escape this conversation before she said anything more.
She'd never meant to break Matt's heart, but she had done it over and over again. She had ruined him. Regret was what she should've felt. She imagined what that might be like, but the emotion was as foreign as the playfulness she had once employed to reel him in. That person was a stranger to her.
"Midland Circle... that doesn't sound familiar either, I suppose?" She willed herself to stop asking, stop trying to jog his memory. It would be so easy to simply pretend. She'd shut Karen and Foggy up, if necessary. She could give Matt what he'd always wanted: the two of them, happy and whole.
Except it would be just another lie she fed him. Fed herself.
She rose from the bed and went to the window. Outside, the rain was still falling. "I died, Matthew. And I was reborn."
