"We have taverns in my world. Actually, this place could fit in quite well where I'm from. Perhaps not with these people specifically," Gilmore said, looking at a man slumped over a wall with his trousers halfway down his legs. "But I've been to ports." They had the same methods of loading ships by hand, the same method of transporting things on hand carts or with horses. He'd seen enough in his new home to know that things had advanced a little beyond that.
“You’re absolutely terrible,” he replied to Theo’s teasing, just as a passing woman looked his companion up and down. Perhaps a tavern would be a much better idea than just wandering around for the moment. He had no doubt that Theo had ways of protecting himself, but how either of their magic would be received here wasn’t something he wanted to find out unless he had to. He led Theo towards the first thing that looked like a tavern, judging by the picture of a bottle of something hanging outside it.
The inside was surprisingly clean and civilised compared to the outside, and though Gilmore still intended to keep Theo within arms reach at all times he lessened his grip on his arm, letting him move away if he wished as they went towards the bar. There were gold pieces in his pocket, Gilmore realised, slightly different to his own currency but presumably the portal had hooked them up with usable currency.
The drinks were a little questionable, and Gilmore thought he had probably been overcharged for it, but they were here for an experience after all.
“We can have a look around after this and see if we can find you some clothes to take back,” he said as they sat, politely keeping some small space between himself and Theo, though not too far that he couldn’t reach over and toy with the pretty thing that rested against Theo’s chest as he spoke. “Just in case you don’t get to keep this ensemble. Which would be a terrible shame,” Gilmore smiled. “I’d be practically heartbroken if I never got to see you in this again.”
Enough, Gilmore. He sat back, though not before he brushed his fingers over Theo’s cheek again. “We have pirates in Exandria. Not where I’m from, but the other continents have a fair few at their ports. I’ve heard as well that there are pirates who attack the airships. They ride on various winged creatures-” he sipped his drink, prepared for it to taste like dirty water, but was pleasantly surprised that it was at least palatable. “-and land on the air ships. Easy for them to escape. That’s not as common, though. I think water pirates are rather more prolific. A lot of trade between the continents goes by water. Easy pickings.”
