The padawan was cut off from the rest of the world to focus on their studies until their master deemed them -- at least passably ready.
Luke wasn't very certain on that, admittedly. The way of the Jedi had changed over the years, if only because there were none. Until he'd come here he'd been the last but for Leia who's interests were much less than his own.
