"I could tell you about the time in my fourth year when our Headmaster arranged for mermaids to kidnap four students as part of a challenge between four other students, or that time that very same Headmaster had a Centaur in the teach Divination, but I must maintain some mystery to keep you interested." Dumbledore had been a complete madman in a lot of ways, but at least there were some stories to tell. "We also had a werewolf as a professor for a year. He was excellent, but some parents--my father included--objected to his...condition." Theo wouldn't say he was fond of werewolves, but Professor Lupin had been one of the better professors if he were forced to be honest about it. "The Headmaster while I was at school had...controversial ideas about education."
Theo laughed a little at the comment about the professions being grand. "Oh, there are plenty of witches and wizards who are good in many areas, but we do like our specializations." He arched a brow with interest at Gilmore's admission. "A franchise? Of shops? And what kind of magical things? Enchant things how? Have you ever made a racing broom? I really miss flying." If Gilmore had any experience with flying objects, Theo might see if he wanted to work together to see what they could come up with. It would be a good project.
"Oh, well. If I told you, I'd have to kill you," Theo said, a small smile teasing its way onto his face. It was fun, talking (and flirting) with Gilmore, and something he hadn't had a chance to do for a very long time, even back home. "And actually, back home I'm not allowed to speak about my work. Along with being mysterious, it's highly classified work esoteric areas of magic. My job title is Unspeakable."
He leaned forward again, truly fascinated by the different classifications of magic users in Gilmore's world. "And all of these types of magic users are...separate? A cleric couldn't also be a champion, for example?" The idea of magic costing anything other than energy and concentration was interesting as well. "For us, magic is an extension of ourselves, channeled through a wand. The wands aren't necessary, but they do concentrate the power and makes it easier to control the spell. Some people have more of an aptitude for a certain type of magic--Charms, or Potions, or Transfiguration for example--but there are only a few with innate abilities."
Gilmore had a very nice smile, Theo decided. It made him feel at ease, and a little bit not at ease at the same time. "You're not rambling, or if you are so am I," he pointed out. "Oh, I miss a few things. Flying, and I miss my own space, and my library. Oh, how I miss my library." He gave a wistful sigh. "It's my favorite room in the entire manor." He sighed again. "I miss my friends, though I'll admit it's easier to socialize here than it was at home. I...think it's the lack of consequences here. You don't know how long someone is going to be around, or when you'll get sent back home, so...I don't know. I've found it easier to put myself out there for some reason than I ever have back home." He wasn't sure why he was sharing this with someone he'd just met. Lack of consequences again, probably.
"You've only just arrived, but is there anything from home you're missing?"
