Gilmore hadn’t felt these kinds of nerves for a long time. And in a way it was nice, it was a thrill to feel nervous, to feel the anticipation and the buzz of adrenaline for something potentially good rather than the last time- well, a few short hours ago when a dragon had descended upon his home.
This was different.
His parents held J’mon Sa Ord in such high regard, as did the vast majority of Marquesians, and so as a boy and as a man Gilmore had done the same. It wasn’t a blind adoration, their liege’s protection was valued, their benevolence and aid was humbling. To have them here in this place that he had suddenly found himself, to have them know him, to reach out to him was a cause for the anticipation, for the quickening of his heartbeat and the slight tremble in his step as he made his way to their room. He felt the way he had felt many moons ago when he had been dating, seeing new men, the wonder of getting to know them and the prickles of desire, and the recent, softer thrills of love and want.
Of course none of that was on his mind, only the comparison of the feeling. That J’mon Sa Ord thought so highly of him was enough to make the butterflies explode in his chest. That he had somehow pleased them in another place and another time delighted him and made his heart race, hoping he would be able to do the same now.
He smoothed out his deep purple robes, thankfully untarnished here, no sign of scorch marks or dust, and ran his fingers through his hair, trying to smarten himself up as he reached his destination and, for a few moments, paced outside for composure. Normally this kind of thing came naturally, or at the very least he had the time to rehearse himself to confidence.
Confidence, Gilmore.
His parents would be so proud.
With one more gentle pat of his beard - thank goodness he’d trimmed it before the catastrophe - Gilmore knocked on the door.
