The whole power-swapping thing had taken a little while to get used to, but Audrey had an entire family of people to help her adjust to everything being so much and so much more intense than usual. A week wasn't long enough to really adjust to. And it had come on all it once instead of a bit at a time. So it was especially jarring. She was sure that if this had been normal or natural or at all long-lasting she would be able to find some sort of physical and mental equilibrium, but that wasn't the way the hotel worked. It was nice, though. Feeling strong. Feeling capable. She could definitely see how someone who felt this way all the time would get into the superhero business. But it was also just a few enhanced abilities. It wasn't like she had magic or telepathy or wings. It wasn't like she was shockingly and unexpectedly human after never knowing what human needs were. And that was sort of more the point here. Even if Jinn wouldn't say it, it must have been really jarring to suddenly need to do things like eat and sleep when it had never been imperative before. And if Audrey could do anything, she could feed people. The enhanced senses actually worked to her advantage here. Which sort of explained how all the Wilsons were such good cooks. Where she usually just taste-tested everything until it was perfect, she could actually smell so precisely that there was no guessing involved. She had rice going on a back burner; meat and sauce on the front. And she was hollowing out a handful of zucchini when Jinn finally joined her in the kitchen. She always made too much, it was the inevitable side-effect of being unable to pare down a single recipe for fewer than eight people, but she always just left the rest in the fridge with a note and it was always gone before anything went bad. She hoped whoever she was feeding appreciated her. She didn't know if Jinn drank, but she figured he didn't. So the glass of wine on the counter next to her was for her benefit alone. And, also, her metabolism was so high now she couldn't even get a buzz. But there was tea, somewhere, and a bottle of sparkling water sitting there waiting to be opened. If Jinn only got a week to actually enjoy food, she was going to make certain it was a good week. |
