Though the grounds were showing some signs of thawing, mornings were still crisp in what was presumably meant to be February on the island. Ice no longer cracked underfoot as Jinn made his way from the hotel, along the familiar dirt path, past the overgrown thicket that shrouded his shed, and toward the cemetery where he spent most of his mornings. Or at least where he used to, before strange happenings began to snag his attention and dominate his hours. He was deep in thought as he approached the now-no-longer completely untended gravestones, but not so lost to his own musings that he wouldn't have detected an open plot. What Tandy had spoken of was concerning. If the ghosts were drawing symbols in blood and robbing residents of their memory — or sure footing, or the privacy of an innocent lie, or freedom from random avian assault — perhaps this was why. Someone had disturbed a grave. The ghosts were retaliating. A simple explanation would be welcome, provided it chased away the seed of doubt J'mon had planted in his mind. But the weeds Jinn had plucked and dug out hadn't yet regrown. The graves were undisturbed. |
