It was the strangest thing. One minute Rabastan had been walking to the casino of whatever Muggle resort he was staying in this month in Brazil, and the next he had just simply been in the lobby of another place. The first thought he had was that perhaps he had accidentally touched a Portkey, that Aurors had found him and had set him up and the Dementors were waiting for him with their bony arms extended to give him their kiss.
Surprise! He wasn't going down without a fight. He was very well prepared to take an eye or an ear, or a few lives to remain free.
The funny thing was that the travel hadn't felt like he'd used a Portkey. Nor did it feel like disappiration, or even the times he had used the floo. In fact, he had felt nothing. Perhaps in the year he had been away from he Wizarding World they had serious advancements in their means of magical travel, or at least in their ways of catching a criminal. Yet no one surrounded him. He wasn't running, just standing at the desk listening to the telephone ring continuously until he had finally gotten sick of hearing it and decided to pick it up.
Against his better judgement he had followed the instructions the creepy voice on the other end had given him, and registered himself, gotten his room key and inspected the place. Nothing had seemed to happen save for switching from a very nice resort in Brazil to some old and decrepit hotel somewhere Scotland. Still, he remained on his guard.
That had been a few hours ago. Further exploration of the place had been done and the Muggle luxuries here were surprising, he had even tried a few things and played a game of darts. Now he was just getting bored. He had been hyped up for adventure earlier, but now that had clearly fallen flat. This place was boring.
That is, until he spotted a familiar face. His lips curled up into a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes as he strode over to greet a face he had thought never to see again. One he had hoped never to see again. It brought back weird memories of moving from one prison right into another, until he was required to do his duty.
"Teddy," he flicked the piece of gum he had been unwrapping into his mouth and pocketed the wrapper before he sat down in the empty seat near where Theo was standing. "This morning. Several things went through my mind, but now I can only assume that this is some sort of neat trick brought to us courtesy of the mysterious Powers That Be."
