He had gone to Phasma before. She had become something of a beacon for him lately. A light to guide him through the fog. She was both friend and advisor. And sometimes, something more. But right now, he needed more than guidance. He needed more than one hand. The egg had finally hatched that afternoon. Thanks to Hux's little gift from the hotel that same morning, his nerves had been all over the board so when the egg started to crack itself open, he'd panicked. Hard. He'd insisted to Hux that he'd accidentally broken the thing and had the man come running to his aid before he was able to realize what was happening. Afterward, once Ari had crawled out and claimed one of eyebrows as punishment for his worries, he'd felt foolish. He'd asked Hux not to speak a word of it to Phasma. She had already compared him to a fourteen-year-old. Having her know that he was incompetant ontop of immature? Ben was trying to look desirable. Neither of those were going to help him win over Phasma. At the same time, he needed help and she was the first person he'd thought of. Having a nap had helped to settle his thoughts but Ari wasn't going back into the egg. A bird that could breathe fire was one problem. The same bird liked to climb as if he were a tree and that was the second problem. The third? Hair chewing. Which then led into the fourth problem and probably the most important; what did she eat? He'd tried bugs from outside already but she'd turned up her beak at anything he'd tried to offer her yet. The only thing that had ended up down her throat was his pillow stuffing (she'd ripped a hole in the one Hux had been sleeping on and ate a few pieces before Ben had woken up to the sound) and his hair. Birds needed to eat normal bird-like things. Even fire-breathing ones. If anyone could get Ari to eat, it would be Phasma. She'd been able to get him to eat when they'd been trapped out in bug land. All he'd asked was for her not to tell him what he was eating. Let him crunch and swallow in ignorance. Ben knew he had bothered her often when she first arrived. Even more so once the egg had landed in his bathroom sink. She'd shown him how to wrap it properly around his body so he could carry it hands-free. He was confident that she would know some way to force food down this stubborn bird's throat. Knowing that she often was around her brother, Ben had headed for Keldo's room first. He knocked on his door four times, rapidly tapping his knuckles to prove urgency. Ari was currently tucked into his shirt, her wings and tailfeather sticking out through his sleeves and the bottom of his shirt. Her head was underneath his armpit which was uncomfortable but as long as she was still, he let her be. "Phasma? I've got an egg-shaped problem!" He called through the door, smiling already as he imagined the look of exasperation on her face. |
