Bucky hadn't thought he'd miss a hotel so damn much but he sure let out one long and drawn out sigh of relief when they were brought back. His body had seen worse days but after almost a week left out in a bug-infested warzone, he was ready to sink into the sleek hotel tubs and call it a day. Steve had been gracious enough to let him use their bathroom first. Probably because of the stings and bites he'd accrued. They were healing nicely but not completely. Some of the smaller wounds weren't as bothersome but the larger ones still itched sometimes. He knew better than to scratch and rip them open. Steve had already done enough at patching him up, which Bucky felt guilty enough about. He didn't want to cause Steve to worry more than he already was. After a few days of constant scrubbing and blessed hot water, he was starting to feel normal again. Even his hair had become softer. A little longer too. He was going to need to get a trim soon. And more conditioner. He’d been fine roughing it but the luxuries of the hotel were easy to get used to. Bucky particularly liked the way they made his hair smell. And Steve’s. But as nice as a long hot shower could be, he kept them short. Any moment he was afraid that Steve would disappear. The hotel liked to play with them, tossing them about like toys. By Sunday though, Buck was forcing himself to relax. He’d slept in a little, though he still popped out of bed before Steve for a quick shower. Once he'd left the bathroom open for Steve, his plan had been to get dressed and head out to grab them breakfast and coffee. Only after he’d dried himself off, he felt strangely lazy and sprawled out on Steve’s bed instead. It was still warm too which made it even easier to sink into it. He'd move when Steve got out of the shower. Until then, he was going to just close his eyes and relax for a few more minutes. The sound of the shower was soothing, almost hypnotic. One arm was dangling over one side of the bed while an ankle was hanging off the other side. Was it his intention to look like a lazy starfish on his friend's bed? Technically, he'd been aiming for sexy. That towel was pretty loose around his hips. But speaking of aim- -there was something poking out from underneath the pillow on his bed. Bucky slowly pulled himself up and across Steve's bed until he was sitting on the edge. Carefully, he reached out and pulled what looked like a piece of paper. On one side, the paper almost looked brown with age. When he flipped it over, he almost dropped it. There, in his hands, was a picture of some old friends. And himself. The Howling Commandos. How did this picture even get here? When Steve came out, Bucky looked up. "Walk down memory lane with me?" He tried to keep his tone light. Even grinned a little as he held up the photograph for Steve to see. He was glad to see his friends again. This was a precious memento that he was grateful to have but it was also a reminder of what was to come. |
