He turned and watched her disappear into the water. Her little quip had sent a hot spark through him, bringing that constant need to prove himself back to the surface. Even if they were just swimming laps in a pool, he had to show that he was the best. Or at least, better than her. Because how else could he prove that he was worthy of her attention? Of anyone’s attention ....
Ben pushed off the edge once she rose back up. He met her in the middle and floated around her. “Race you back and forth? First one to stop loses.” Because it wasn’t just about speed. If she was good as she was claiming to be, and Ben was beginning to think she was, then it was possible she could outlast him. This was good practice for him since he was always so impatient. This would force him to steady his pace.
He flicked a bit of water at her and grinned. “If you want to make it interesting, how about a bet?”
