An afternoon jog around the perimeter of the hotel and through the path in the woods helped Ava distract herself for a bit, her mind still partially reeling from the conversation the day before with Poe that had quickly slipped out of her control and into unfamiliar territory. Slightly embarrassed of what she admitted, him calling her out on the fact that she clearly liked somebody. Enough to be asking questions about things like kissing. It didn’t make sense. Ava had been a stealth operative from her mid-teens. Had faced down and taken down numerous targets, almost always without a single scratch in return. And only a few months back had been days away from her own looming death. She had no reason to suddenly be intimidated by things far less life-threatening, had been actively trying to live her life now that she wasn’t fighting to keep it. Except the advantages her abilities allowed her in the face of danger were glaringly obvious weaknesses when it came to anything involving touch or intimacy. Left Ava feeling self-conscious and uncomfortable with her own body. And right now being sweaty didn’t help all that much, rushing to make herself a bit less disgusting in the ten minutes before Miguel showed up to her room, for whatever reason that she wasn’t trying to overthink. He hadn’t really said, but she’d find out soon enough. She splashed water over her face, changed into a shirt that wasn’t so smelly. Could probably fit in a shower, but didn’t want to deal with the issue of wet hair. But hers was messy from the jog, and Ava pulled down her ponytail, ran fingers through her hair to break up some tangles. And in the remaining few minutes before Miguel arrived, Ava paced back and forth by her bed, trying to direct her nervous energy somewhere so she wasn’t quite anxious when facing him. When he finally knocked at the door, she almost stumbled right over her feet to get to it, poking her head right through to smile at him in greeting. “Hey.” |
