Kelly sighed loud enough for it to echo through the empty lobby as the laptop screen at the front desk went dark and unresponsive. She closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose as she tried to make a single bit of sense out of her current circumstance. Of course — of course — she’d wake up, inexplicably, in a hotel with no staff in sight. It was sketchy and made all the alarm bells go off in her head — which meant it was par for the course for her life now. What’s the last thing you remember? Kelly had been working at the bar. It had been a quiet night, nothing outside the norm for a Wednesday. Her temple throbbed; the remainder of the couple handful of shots she’d taken to kill the time until the end of her shift. But she hadn’t blacked out. She’d been responsible and gone home to tuck herself into her uncomfortable motel bed. And then she had jerked awake, draped over one of the most luxurious chairs she’d ever seen. If this was some kind of mindfuck, Kelly had to hand it to the demons; they didn’t lack for taste. Like a bloodhound, she sniffed out the alcohol on the main floor. The bar was as abandoned as the lobby. She wondered if she was completely alone in the building or if it was just that the other guests took what they liked back to their rooms. Drunk was the last thing she wanted to be if this was some kind of trap, but she couldn’t think with a looming hangover. Better to keep it at bay until she got her bearings. “Eeny meeny miny… moe,” she said as she pointed at the bottle of Jack Daniels. Kelly poured herself two fingers before filling a pint glass full of water. She shot the liquor and chugged the chaser like a seasoned professional. Just a couple more of those and I’ll start figuring out how Ash fucked up this time.
