There's gonna come a day when you'll feel better You'll rise up free and easy on that day And float from branch to branch, lighter than the air Just when that day is coming, who can say?
When Eddie had offered him his wedding ring as a substitute, Stan had been genuinely touched -- even if it wasn’t the same in meaning or in weight or fit, it was still something. Even if he wasn’t really sure he was technically married anymore, he still missed Patty something awful and liked the idea of having something to feel connected to her with, still.
So it was something of a surprise and a shock for him to find his real ring (and glasses) on the counter by the sink in the bathroom. He’d stared at them for a long time, silent, a little too emotional and then he’d picked the ring up and pushed it up over his knuckle to sit directly in front of the Eddie’s. He considered the way that looked for a time before deciding that it was a thing that could, and should stay as it was.
And then he washed his hands more times than was ever strictly necessary, even for him, before realizing that there’d be no sleeping tonight, not even a little. He pushed his glasses onto his nose, marveled over what it was like to have clear vision after so long without, and then decided to give Nicky a night off from his complaining and headed to the kitchens instead.
If sleep wasn’t going to happen, there was no reason not to drink coffee at three am. That was just pure logic, Stanley was fairly certain.
