If he took a moment to really think about it, he'd think it was an insane coincidence that they kept running into the same people in the apocalypse back home. What were the chances that some rando guy that he helped at the side of the road had been bit by Vanessa, as well as a Daywalker? How man of them were there out there, that had been turned into whatever they were? The Daywalker bite, given to someone who'd been bit and cured by Vanessa, seemed to make them invincible.
More or less. Axel didn't really want to know what the limits of that were. He settled on a stool, allowing Vanessa to get the glasses and the bottle for them. He waited for her to pour, then lifted the glass. "To Scarlett," he said, saying the name he rarely said. He'd taken her death hard, on the heels of finding his sister, finding out what happened to her, and losing her just as fast as he found her. The fact he'd been frozen in place, unable to stop Scarlett had made it twice as hard to lose her the way he had.
