The Precursors were especially unsettling today, which meant Newt had gotten restless in his wanderings. He'd been roaming for hours, exploring parts of the hotel that he'd already explored just to keep himself moving. He'd never be able to reject the Precursors -- and truth be told, he didn't want to -- but there were times he really would have preferred quiet from them.
His wanderings brought him to the boat dock, as they sometimes did. He stood there for a moment when he realized there was already somebody else there, debating whether or not to stay. Finally, he split the difference by stepping a little closer and asking, "Hey, mind some company out here?"
He'd have no problems with it if the man didn't want any.
