It was fair. Joe would not want him to feel that guilt, nor would he want him to feel so much pain. He nodded his agreement in the dark, and made a soft sound of agreement when he realized Stanley probably couldn't see the nod.
"It's hard, being with someone for centuries," he murmured. People normally thought he was being hyperbolic when he said that but he was far from it. So many hundreds of years with the same people; he missed them all, now. "I'll need friends. Connections. Maybe a hug," he added with a laugh, a joke that was not a joke. "That might all smooth out my edges."
He tilted his head as he listened to Stanley talk about his wife, and he could understand that concern. "I hope they are not missing us," he agreed. "I hope that your wife is not worried. Why were you leaving?" he asked, curiously.
