While looking over Aurora's assignment, Bill pulled his chair from the side of the table on which he usually sat, around to the other side next to Aurora. Over the last couple of weeks the afternoon sun, when there was sun, had begun to shine right in his eyes by the end of their lesson. "This is great," he said to his attentive student as he took his seat.
Aurora was an exemplary student, and made his job both easy and enjoyable. So much so that Bill would sometimes wonder why he hadn't gone into teaching. Then he would force himself to recall trying to help younger brothers with homework, and how miserable that often was. It was a real shame that Aurora wasn't getting to go to a proper school. Chances were, with such individual attention, she would end up with a better education, but being (essentially) home-schooled just wasn't the same as having peers with whom she could learn and grow.
"Now that you're familiar with the names, pronunciation, and forms of the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc," Bill said, placing Aurora's perfect parchment in front of her, "We can start working on meaning, then reading. Meaning will be easy enough for you I think, but reading- runes can be read left to right, right to left, top to bottom, or bottom to top, which is what makes interpreting them so complicated." Bill glanced at his watch. "Do you have any questions?" They had gone over time again, but it wasn't as if there was a need for a strict timetable.
