Even moving slowly, and doing eveything slowly, it got to the point where James realised he had forgotten to ask if Severus took milk and sugar. It would be just like him to have his tea fancy - lemon juice instead of milk and half a spoon of sugar or something. He made his way back to the sitting room and popped his head round the door. Severus wasn't there.
Though Lily clearly trusted him, it did not take much for James to lose that second hand faith. Where had the little bugger gone? If it had been one of James' friends, he would have called their name, but he thought it best not to give Snape forewarning that he was coming. James decided to check the bathroom, as the only reasnable place Severus could be. He ascended the stairs and before he had even reached the top step, noticed that the bedroom door was ajar. Frowning, James hurried over to catch Severus in the act - whatever that act was.
Under the bed was not exactly where James expected the other boy to be. Lily's underwear drawer, more likely. He watched Severus for a couple of seconds before speaking.
"Lost something?" he asked, his voice all the more threatening in its softness.
