Who: Cullen, Keira and Fiona When: At night, after the explosion Where:The Garrett's family homestead. What:A reprieve from the Haven Heart Attack.
“You’re asking me to literally find a needle, Ma!” Fiona called from the kitchenette, over to where her mom was sitting just a few yards from her, shirt in her lap, thread spool to the right on the dinged up side table that had been a faithful servant to the lot of them over the years. It still had all their initials dutifully carved into the wood. A trend Fiona had started when she was seven. It had been during her, ‘this is mine’ phase. Almost everything in the house had FAG carved on it. The tragic state of her initials had not been lost on her, or any of the other Garretts over the years, nor the comical fact that most of the neighbors thought they'd been victims of a hate crime.
"Check over here...I thought I saw it bounce over here." Was Mama Moira's suggestion. A suggestion that her oldest daughter dutifully but impatiently set to task on..
She was on her hands and knees, meticulously trying to find the sewing needle her mom had dropped with her arthritic fingers. It of course, had bounced and with all the cracks in the worn out floor it was hard to find a sliver of metal under the insufficient wattage. “Hold on…” she moved from the floor, grabbed her jacket, “I’ll be right back.” and flew out the door, braids flicking behind her as she ran out to the tiny shed out back. This was her workspace, her vacation spot, the place she got away to…even in January.
When she flicked on the light, the bulb struggled to get bright. It flickered a few times but in the end it submitted to her will. She wasn't in a hurry to get back inside, but she made a good show that she was…looking for that magnet in her drawer of miscellaneous necessities she'd acquired over the years. She passed over it a few times, thought about having a cigarette and realized she really hadn't been feeling that great tonight.
A few deep breaths and then she grabbed onto the rectangular hunk of magnetized iron. When she turned to go, she had the best surprise of the night. She took in all of him all at once and frowned. “You, look like this shit day threw up all over you.”
