Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Axel and Open
When: Late afternoon
Where: A park in the city
Warnings: TBD

The day seemed little different than any day in midwinter: the sun hidden behind dull gun-metal skies, the breeze cold but above freezing, the sidewalks wet with rain and melting snow. Rain turned his hair into crazy loops of wet curls, trickled down the upturned collar of his coat. Hidden beneath his scarf, his uppermost tentacles threaded into his curls, out of sight of curious eyes, and he could taste the rain, scent the multiple components of pollution and mutation. Little of the latter anymore; most of the mutagens had worn away with time and weather patterns. What few molecules of it he could taste were unlikely to do him or anyone else harm.

Axel's heels rang on the sidewalk, loud in the muted day. Few were out in the persistent drizzle, and those who were hid beneath umbrellas. The cold and the wet didn't bother him; he enjoyed the rain, a creature of water and moisture. Normally he would be in his office at Aberforth Pharmaceuticals, but there had been an argument with members of his staff. He'd been angry, and angry was never a good thing for him. To prevent damage to property or staff, he thought it best if he went out and walked it off. It had worked; he felt calmer, more in control of himself, though his tentacles still wanted to emerge and let the rain fall on them. Perhaps later, when he was home, he'd strip off his shirt and stand out on the balcony with them extended.

He paused on the sidewalk that ran along the edge of the duck pond and turned his steps to the shore, the grass tan and crunchy with winter's cold. Before him the pond rippled gently in the breeze, as grey and cold as the sky above. The tense line of Axel's shoulders relaxed and he tucked his long hands into his coat pockets, his breath a soft white puff before him. The movement of the water was mesmerizing, calming, and he felt the remainder of his tension slough slowly away.

A little rough weather didn't bother Rika - big surprise. She was used to braving the elements. An icy rain was kind of a bummer, but it meant she could go for a long walk without being bothered much. Hardly anyone else was out unless they absolutely had to be, and thus, not apt to go poking for conversation - or even take much notice of her at all. That suited her needs fine. In what precious little free time she had, she'd been exploring as much of the city as she possibly could. She didn't even entirely know why she was doing it - it wasn't like her people needed the intel. They had informants. And it wasn't as if she was going to find the key to her escape in the center of town. She found she just couldn't help but explore. Said explorations would have been much more enjoyable if she'd been allowed to keep her own clothing when she'd been 'liberated.' She wasn't sure what possible harm she could have done if she'd been allowed to keep her own boots, but it had all been taken away. The clothing she'd been given in return was fine and comfortable, but the boots were secondhand and had obviously been broken in by someone else. They fit her feet strangely, and she found the change in her step a little jarring.

It occurred to Rika as she looked down at her tram schedule map that she was hopelessly lost, which was actually quite a strange sensation for her. She usually prided herself on an excellent sense of direction, but she found the city changed everything. All the buildings were so strange and foreign, everything started to just blur together. Rika found the tram on the list that would take her back to her district, only to realize she had no idea what district she was in now. She'd been walking for a couple of hours, hopping trams and getting off at random. District boundaries seemed to be the sort of thing the average citizen took for granted, and why wouldn't they? They'd lived there all their lives. They'd never known anything differently.

Rika continued to frown down at the schedule in her hands for a few moments longer, before eventually sighing and pocketing it. She took a look at her surroundings, but found nothing to help point her in the right direction. Well, nothing save for another human being. That would have to do. Tentatively, Rika approached the stranger. "Excuse me," she said. "Sorry to bother you, but, um... can you tell me what district I'm in?"

Axel heard the patter of approaching boots on the sidewalk; someone light, a woman or child. He didn't bother to shift his attention from the water until a lilting voice asked where she was.

He turned his head and saw a young girl in winter clothing, blonde hair darkened by the rain, clinging to a face that was pale and gamine. Very young-looking, possibly adolescent. Huge blue eyes blinked up at him. She looked harmless, but very few Gifted actually were.

"You're in the North District," he said, looking down his nose at her. "How do you not know where you are?"

He tipped his head slightly, full mouth pursing a moment. Ah. Given her youth, she might possibly be one of the "rescued" brought in to "civilize." Preposterous. Stealing someone from their family was hardly likely to make them grateful, to craft them into ideal Haven subjects. He understood the need to occasionally bring in fresh blood (he was certain it wasn't for humanitarian ideals), but ripping someone from the arms of their family seemed both cruel and counterproductive.
