It was kind of like a mini-vacation. After handling the estate, Elsa was exhausted. She’d done as much as she could herself, since she still felt guilty over hurting Anna after their parents had died. But Varda had had a good idea, and she’d absconded with her sister to Paris for two nights in the city of lights.
They’d taken the chunnel. For reasons.
It had been an amazing trip, complete with a continental breakfast that had fresh pastries, jams, and coffee that Anna actually wanted a second cup of. There'd even been a part of the tunnel where they could see the water around them! Most traveling left people exhausted and in need of some kind of respite, but Anna had left the journey in high spirits, even after the cross-country trip to the city.
Of course, Paris had something to do with it, too, being the city of Romance and all, but she was really just happy to have this time with Elsa.
When they finally got to their hotel room, Anna bounced through the door and practically tossed her suitcase at the bed, "There's so many things to see! Where should we start? Maybe we should go to one of those cafes and eat croissants! You look like you could use a pick-me-up."
If Anna found someone, Elsa wouldn’t complain as long as she got to spend some time with her sister. She smiled as Anna practically bounced around. “I’m just a little tired, that’s all. Some food and French coffee should help. I’ll have to rely on you to translate!”
"To think, all of those years of French are finally going to pay off!" Anna said, giggling. She'd only taken it because the tutor was good looking, and because she wanted to construct totally suave flirts with it. She definitely hadn't gotten her money's worth yet, not by a long shot.
"We'll find a shop with delicious pastries, and cookies, and coffee, and we'll pig out! Come on, come on!"
Anna was already heading to the door. She barely stopped to check and make sure she had her room key on her, or even any money.
Elsa hadn't expected any less, but as long as Anna got something out of it did it really matter her motivations? She really just wanted Anna to be happy. And to maybe find someone that could calm her down. Laura hadn't really done that, but at least they were all still friends. She grabbed her purse and the room keys, and rushed after her sister. Silently, she put a key into Anna's pocket, then squeezed an arm around her. "Pigging out won't look attractive."
It was good to see Anna excited about something again, too.
Feeling the slight pressure of the card in her back pocket, Anna wrapped an arm around Elsa in return and squeezed her gratefully. It was true, Laura hadn't really grounded her at all. And she never could say that it was ~true love~, but she'd thought that was progress. Maybe it still was, since they'd ended it so amicably? Either way, she couldn't blame her; That doctor she was head over heels for was hot.
"It'll look attractive for you, you look attractive no matter what! And looking like a big face-stuffing pig is part of my charm? Maybe? But I'm not here to get swept off my feet by some hot french person! We should just have fun, right?"
“I’m sure stuffing my face wouldn’t make me look attractive. You’re just biased.” Even Varda wouldn’t think she was attractive pigging out. “But we should have fun...I’m not sure where to start. You’re the worldly one, Anna.”
"Well, you ARE my sister. And a queen. Kind of. It's hard not to be biased," Anna said. It was always nice to be praised by Elsa, too, and it put her in even higher spirits as they headed out of the hotel. She'd taken some time before the trip to google various things, and so it was with great confidence that she hailed a taxi.
"I know exactly where we can get some amazing snacks and coffee. I just don't know how to get there from here, so we'll let someone else drive."
“I’m no Queen here.” Elsa put her arm around Anna and squeezed. “And honestly that’s kind of a relief. I have enough responsibilities being the face of Varda’s diamonds.” She didn’t mind it, it could be really exciting at times, and boring at others, but at least she didn’t have the fate of a whole country in her hands.
Just thinking about it could give her an anxiety attack, so she turned her mind to other things. “Oh!”
She took a selfie of them and sent it to Varda.
It was a cute selfie, one where Anna actually managed to restrain the urge to put bunny ears on Elsa's head. It took a lot of self-restraint, and she giggled after the picture was snapped. "We should get super dressed up while we're here and go somewhere fancy! You can send her selfies looking all sexy and I totally will not put bunny ears on you then, either. And I guess it's probably good we aren't royalty? I mean, being a Princess was less responsibility but I still had to learn a lot of boring things."
Etiquette, useless embroidery patterns, dance steps - that part actually wasn't so bad - and all kinds of things having to do with economics and history. Just in case she ever had to be a Queen somewhere else. It made Anna wrinkle her nose, "I'm glad we're just us. And here's our Taxi!"
Anna motioned Elsa into the Taxi, and waited until they were both settled before giving the name of the cafe to the driver.
“Lucky for you I brought a fancy dress because I thought you’d drag me out.” It gave her the opportunity to psyche herself up to the idea. Not that she hated going out with her sister but new situations and places made her nervous. She got into the taxi and rested her hands in her lap. “I’m glad we’re just us, too.”
It wasn’t too far to the cafe but Elsa still winced at how much it cost for the taxi. She could afford it now, which was wonderful, but old habits died hard. She slipped out and waited for her sister. “I hope they have… chocolate.”
"Oh trust me, this is France. They have all kinds of chocolate." Anna boasted. She was extremely proud of herself for finding such a place. It was set on the corner of a busy street, with one of those outdoor cafes Paris was so famous for running the sidewalk in either direction. The place was definitely a favorite haunt of locals and tourists, and the smell that wafted out of the doors was so delicious that it was no mystery as to why.
Luckily for them, the time of day was usually reserved for lunch, and though the place was busy it wasn't packed with people. Anna took one look at the case of pastries on display and fell instantly in love. "Elsa, look! They have an eclair as big as my arm!"
The prices were less dizzying than imagined, too. That was always a plus.
Chocolate was important. Above all other things it was the sister thing between them. It seemed strange but it was something Elsa could connect to with Anna over, especially since she’d never had a boy crazy phase. Or girl crazy one. “This place is amazing, we have to get… four of those eclairs. But we should eat real food too.”
But chocolate was real food. Technically. Just not lunch food.
Anna had the same thought. "Eclairs are TOTALLY real food. Especially four of them! And one of those croissants there, look, with the chocolate on them! And ooooo, they have macarons!"
Her hands were flailing and she moved back and forth from one end of the counter to the other, suddenly overwhelmed with all the possibilities. And that was before she even glanced at the beverage menu. "I want to live here. Right in this cafe."
“You can’t live in a cafe, Anna.” Elsa shook her head and laughed. “Where would you sleep? Can you imagine how much weight you’d gain if you lived off of eclairs and macarons?” Though to be fair Anna would probably look really cute no matter what. But Elsa might also be biased.
"Awwwwwwwww. Life is unfair. I wish we could eat all the eclairs and macarons we wanted and never gain a pound. How come Science hasn't come up with something for this yet?" Anna scrunched her nose up and got back into line with her sister, turning her attention to the list of various delicious coffee drinks on offer. But she added, while she considered a very large iced latte with an extra shot of espresso, "Science has failed us, Elsa."
Elsa shook her head at her sister, a soft smile crossing her lips. “Perhaps this is something you should bring up to that Stark character. Maybe he could fund a research project. The Eclair Project?”
"The Eclair Project, suggested by Anna, who should get a piece of the royalties or grant funds." Anna said, her hands coming up to create air quotes. She nodded her head and grinned, "I like it."
There were only a few people in line ahead of them now, and Anna made a finalized list of things to order in her head. In French, because it was easier to think it through beforehand than to try and speak it on the fly. "What drink do you want, so I can order it for you?"
Probably the French was completely unnecessary. The cafe seemed to get a lot of tourists, both American and European of all kinds. But still, she liked to use the language she'd spent so much time learning. Even if half of the time had been French Kissing instead of... you know, actually learning anything.
“Surprise me,” Elsa said, putting her hands on her sister’s shoulders. She was likely to crash early tonight, but some food would help and she looked forward to Anna dragging her all over creation the rest of the week.
