“You don’t need to apologize for that,” Rachel replied, though she was fully aware that wouldn’t exactly help Abby with her problem. For whatever reason, Abby took it deeply personally that she couldn’t prevent even the minor things with her power. On some level, Rachel understood; it must have felt helpless, powerless, to see these things and not be able to change the outcome. On the other hand, the depth of Abby’s guilt over the matter spoke to something else, a deeper issue that hadn’t yet been solved.
“I’m sorry that we let it happen at all. You’re supposed to be safe here.”
Something had failed on their end that something like this had been allowed to happen. The amount of trouble that was likely to rain down on them after all of these misfortunes, mishaps and now actual death? Rachel’s head hurt just thinking about it.
Noticing that Abby was glancing at the corner, Rachel followed her gaze. It was a stuffed box just sitting in the corner. “That stuff belong to someone else?”
