The fuck was that? Street smarts, book smarts, didn't matter. For a second, Buck wasn't sure he even saw what he saw. It was half a flicker, really. But for just that half-second, the room wasn't so bare and cavernous. Buck wasn't even certain Evie was responsible. It was probably just the room, which was not a very comforting thought. Sounded almost dangerous.
"Sounds like you getting cheated," Buck decided when Evie confirmed she didn't make any more than anyone else. "I mean, fuck. I'm breaking things and getting paid just as much? That don't seem fair." Granted, the cost of the fire alarm that started all this, if it really was broken, would likely be docked from Buck's pay. But the point still stood in his opinion. She was doing more than the average super to try and pitch in. Didn't make much sense that she was still getting the standard rate.
He took her ribbing in stride. He probably asked for it, to be honest. And it added to his still-forming opinion of her. Mercifully, he didn't say anymore on the subject of her tumble. She was red enough as it was. So he just braced enough to give her enough of a lift to get back to her feet, then dropped the subject and her hand. Like it never happened!
"How do y'know I wasn't paying attention to it? That's giving yourself a lot of credit, girl. Movies have soundtracks and no one thinks it's weird. Maybe I just like music when I'm listening to you give me a hard time." The girl moniker was partially practical in nature. He'd read her name before, but she hadn't said it. So now Buck was second-guessing what he thought he remembered. Was it Everly? Eevee? Just Eve? Evan. No, that was a dude's name. E-VEE. Like a --
Robots.
She seemed suddenly enthused by an idea, so he put the idea of defrosting anything on hold. And just like that, Evie was bringing her little robot buddies online. To say Buck's eyebrows lifted was a given. He just stared as she went all Matrix-y, glazed-over eyes and disembodied voice. Speaking of movies, this was beginning to trip into sci-fi horror territory. Tracking the controlled robot with his eyes, Buck just couldn't shut up. "So much for being not great on missions. If we attack Apple next, you are so coming."
