She nodded ever so slightly in acknowledgement of both words he thought; the invisibility and the telepathy both confirmed for him. It was only the surface thoughts that drifted to her. Mercy rarely delved further into another person's mind than that, but sometimes it was easier to keep her telepathy permanently "on" than to try and block out all the thoughts. Besides, that was sometimes the most social interaction she allowed for herself, even though she wasn't talking back to them. The discomfort at her telepathy she noticed, but chalked it up to a standard discomfort with the ability. The public wouldn't want people like her locked up if they were comfortable with the idea of someone reading their thoughts.
Mercy thought to comment on the issue of curses. There were certainly those of them who could affect his luck, or probability, and could do all manner of things to be giving him a bad day; but technically speaking, curses did not exist. If she were a braver person, she would have opened the discussion to that and had a pleasant chat while he examined her; but instead, she remained quiet and obediently followed the doctor's instructions. When he asked about which ankle, she nodded. When he wanted her on the exam bed, she nodded and climbed atop it. She pressed the ice pack to the injury, and a small smile of relief even flashed across her face when he said it wasn't sprained.
And when he asked if she wanted a lollipop, Mercedes nodded again. "Grape, please," she requested with a shy smile.
It felt wrong not to talk to him, even though the thought of holding a proper conversation made her heart beat nervously. Still, he had been nice, and she imagined that the clinic didn't get so many visitors when they had agents who could heal, so it felt polite at the very least to offer him some chatter. "Why do you work here?" she asked quietly, risking a glance at his face. "Aren't you afraid?" The question could apply to the risk he took with exposing himself as a super, just as well as it could apply to a regular human working among supers. In this case, she intended for it to mean the latter.
