She had run out of the stash that her brother had left before he’d been unceremoniously moved. Amber didn’t notice its loss so much during the day, but at night? Night was the worst. Rolling around in her bed for hours, she’d eventually get so anxious about sleeping not overcoming her that she’d get up, wander the halls for an hour or two, and then meander into the leisure room to watch television until sleep finally swept over, or the sun began to rise.
Tonight, she’d barely even made it to the leisure room. After wandering, exhausted, through the halls of the quiet facility, Amber stumbled by the cafeteria and peered in.
When was the last time she had eaten a full meal?
Didn’t matter. She wasn’t hungry. (She was.) And the whole place, well, it was empty. (It wasn’t.) There was no point.
She finally managed to get to the leisure room and flopped on one of the sofas. As soon as she was horizontal, the world at least stopped spinning so much.
The television nearest her sofa was off, but there was another one on somewhere else in the room, where someone – or some people – were watching something. Amber couldn’t quite make it out.
Why couldn’t she sleep? All she wanted – was to fall asleep.
Her fingertips crackled. Sparks flew off each finger. Whatever lights were on in the room suddenly went out as Amber absorbed their electricity – as well as that of the television.
Sitting up quickly, Amber glanced around and began breathing heavily. She could feel the electricity humming through her body, as though her veins were the current’s circuitry and wiring. “I’m sorry!” She cried to the other end of the room, where someone had been watching a program. “I’ll—I’ll try to get this fixed real quick!”
